DARE YOU ENTER APARTMENT 13...? | 11/05/2009

TAMBA's latest viral game launch is for OCR, the leading UK examination body. Having previously commissioned TAMBA to develop their National and CLAiT microsites, OCR wanted to use TAMBA's viral marketing division to promote their national Science qualifications, including units such as Forensic Science, Food Science and Science in Sport.

As with any good viral campaign, the context needed to showcase the client's product whilst also engaging the identified audience. To this end, a viral game was created, focusing on the central theme of a murder scene investigation - a theme that bases itself around key elements of OCR's syllabus, yet is intriguing enough to attract and hold the interest of a relatively young audience of school and college learners.

Titled "Apartment 13", the game challenges players to enter the scene of a murder, gather and study evidence and ultimately bring the perpetrator to justice. The player is taken through several scenes; the crime scene itself, the subsequent autopsy and finally the courtroom. Each scene allows the player to act as a forensic specialist, taking a scientific approach to analysing potential murder weapons and the victim's body before coming to a final conclusion.

For those with squeamish stomachs, don't worry. Despite the initial premise, the game is presented in a light-hearted manner. In order to keep the game accessible, gruesome realism is discarded in favour of hand-drawn cartoon-style illustrations, evocative of the signature style of Nintendo's "Mii" characters.

"Apartment 13 has been created to increase awareness of the OCR National qualification, which are designed to recognise achievements in a modern, practical way," said Michelle Hughes, E-Marketing Manager at OCR. "TAMBA was appointed for this project as it has an excellent reputation for viral games. The striking graphic style we have chosen, teamed with TAMBA’s seeding expertise, can really make an impact on the market."
